Abbey Vocational School Athletes excel at Antrim

The 'Ulster Schools Track and Field Finals', attracted over six hundred athletes, to a wind and rain soaked Antrim Forum on Friday evening and Saturday last. Abbey Vocational School athletes had an unprecedented number of individual and team successes. The schools Junior Under 15 Girls were crowned Ulster Team Champions - a first for a Donegal school - and had a number of top three individual finishes and an impressive 4 x 100m relay victory.

Karl Griffin, in the Inter [U17] 800m ran a magnificent time of 1min 54.85secs to win and break a thirty year old Ulster schools record. The performance was also inside the qualification time for the European Under 18 Youth Olympics later in the summer. Karl’s performance mirrored a number of top three medal winning performances.

 

On Friday evening Ciara Crawford, junior 1200m race walking, Hannah Campbell, Killybegs Vocational Junior Pole Vault , Christopher Doherty, Carrick Vocational Senior Pole Vault started the onslaught with victories. Kelly McGrory, fought her way through Junior 100m and 200m semi finals and in Saturday afternoon finals had a victory in the 100m and a 2nd placing in the 200m finals.

 

Kate McGowan and Emma Brady won their respective semi finals of the Junior 75m Hurdles and in a closely fought final finished 2nd and 3rd. Earlier Emma had won silver in the triple jump while Kate came from 5th to 2nd place with her final attempt in the Long Jump.

 

Louise Harvey, in her 6th year of schools athletics, won the Senior 100m Hurdles and was runner up in the 400m Hurdles final.

 

The climax of all schools competitions are the 4 x 100m relays. The AVS Girls Junior Team won their semi final early in the afternoon and in an exciting final the squad of Niamh McGrory, Emma Brady, Kate McGowan,Ruth Gilespie and Kelly McGrory, ran 51.98secs for a very popular victory.

 

Neighbouring school athletes from Killybegs and Carrick Vocational schools also had numerous outstanding performances. Mark McGuinness, 3rd Inter steeplechase, Daniel Gallagher 3rd Junior 1500m and Barry Quigg, 1st Senior Boys High Jump -1.85m were top drawer.

 

Other AVS noteworthy performances came from Sean Kerrs, 6th in the Inter 3000m, Adam Gallagher, Inter High Jump,Christopher O’Laughlan, 80m Junior Hurdles and the Boys Junior relay team.
The above mentioned athletes now look forward 'Irish Schools' in Tullamore on Saturday 4th June.
