Athletics NI & Ulster Rising Stars Indoor Competition

Saturday, 05 February 2011

Saturday afternoon saw the first of the new Rising Stars Squad Competitions at Cookestown Leisure Centre. Athletes, Officials and Supporters traveled from Belfast, Derry/L’Derry, Donegal and Cavan to the central location to compete for the prize of Best Region of the Day.

The competition was organised by Elaine McCaffrey (Athletics Northern Ireland) with the help of Eamon Harvey (AAI), Barrie Holmes UAC and his excellent team of Sportshall Officials and the Rising Stars coaches on the day.

The competition took on a Sportshall Athletics multi event format and the main prizes of the day were awarded for the best “All Round” Athlete. Each athlete competed in a Sprint, Jump, Throw and Endurance event throughout the course of the day, recording a score for each individual performance (1 point was awarded for the best individual performance).

These individual scores were then added together to get an overall “All Rounder” Score (Lowest total score wins). The Multi-event approach made for an exciting days competition with each athlete calling on all their athleticism to achieve the best “All Round” performance.

The Winner of the Girls “All Rounder” competition, showing her versatility across the events was Kate McGowan from Donegal. Kate scored a very impressive score of 13 points across the 4 events. The Boys Winner was Kadhum Hasson from the Belfast Team who also achieved an impressive score of 12 points overall. Both these athletes show promising talent for the future. The trophy for the Best Overall Region of the Day went to the Belfast Squad. It will be interesting to see if they can retain the trophy when it comes to the outdoor competition in May 2011.
