British Sportshall Finals in Birmingham

Tír Chonaill Athletes, all part of Donegal Teams, performed with distinction when the' British Sportshall Finals' were held last weekend in the NEC, Birmingham.


Five club athletes were part of the twelve girls under 13 team. Kelly McGrory was the outstanding athlete of the age group. The Laghey lass, a 1st year student at the Abbey Vocational School, with a 1 min18.7secs time won the very demanding 6 lap final, cleared 1.45m in the High Jump for 2nd place -- on count back-- and anchored the 4x2 lap sprint relay team of club mates Emma Brady, Ruth Gillespie and Kate McGowan to heat and final victories. Its rare for Irish competitors to get onto the winning podium at this event which attracts the top Under 13 and 15 athletes from England, Scotland and Wales. Emma Brady and Kate McGowan, both fought their way into the six girl 2 Lap sprint final. Emma 2nd 22.3secs and Kate 3rd 22.5secs were ousted by Birmingham's Amelia Benjamin, 22.2secs for an outright victory

Silver & Bronze in the Girls U13 2 Lap Race


In the 4 x 2 lap relay the Donegal girls won their heat in 1min 31.8secs and in the final improved their time to 1min 30.7secs pushing West Yorkshire and Warwickshire into the minor medal placing's.

Eva McMullin, Ballyshannon and Creevy NS, ran 1min 22.5secs for an 8th place finish in the 6 lap race and had a similar position in the standing long jump - 2.15metres. Eva also added valuable points in the parlauf relay.

 

Ruth Gillespie, Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Killymard in addition to her successful exploits on the relay team also cleared 1.25m in the High Jump for additional valuable team points. Donegal finished 7th of the twelve regional teams.

Clare Brady was the clubs only representative on the seen girls Under15 team. This group performed magnificently and finished 4th overall at the end of competition. Clare, a student at the Abbey Voc School, added to the overall points total with the following performances - Standing Long Jump -2.06m;Speed Bounce -76; and 4lap -51.4secs.
