Young Tír Chonaill Athletes in Magherafelt last Saturday

 

 

Magherafelt’s magnificent and very cold Meadowbank Indoor Arena was the venue on Saturday last for the final round of the 'Ulster/Athletics Northern Ireland Indoor Juvenile Championships'.

 

Thomas McGowan, in the U12 Shot Putt discipline, was the first club athlete in action at 10am. A very impressive best putt of 9.66m was rewarded with a gold medal. Well done Thomas and Coach Paul O’Gara who works with the throwers in the club.

In the sprinting events club athletes had many fine performances. Amie McCafferty negotiated the U13 Girls 60m Hurdles for a bronze medal winning position, time 13.03secs. Other good performances in the 60m sprints came from the U12 group, Katie Gillespie, 10.65secs; Aine Gallagher,10.1secs; Jane Daly, 10.86secs. Both Jane and Aine also had good performances in the Long Jump.

In the Boys U12 60m sprint good performances were recorded by Dane Travers, 9.94secs and Ronan McMullin, 10.64secs.

 

The Girls U13 60m group had good performances from Amie McCafferty, 9.64secs, Ava Duncan, 9.71secs and Long Jump 3.29m, Chloe Masterson, 9.97secs, Eve Travers, 10.15secs and Anna Morrow, 10.55secs.

 

Freddie Cullen, Boys U13 was happy with his performances in the 60m/Long Jump and Shot putt.  Caolan Boyle, 60m, 10.27secs/ Long Jump 3.01m and Dane Travers, 3.18m also performed well.

As we moved into the afternoon Louise Harvey, Girls U18 qualified for two final, 60m Hurdles and 300m. Mark McGuinness, Boys U16, ran a gritty 1500m to finish a close 2nd in a good time of 4mins 27.77secs. Sean Kerrs, in his first competitive 1,500m finished 5th in the same race, 4mins 54.85secs. As the individual races came to a conclusion Louise Harvey recorded two impressive final wins in the 60m H, 9.52secs and 300m flat - 43.18secs.

Relays are also exciting and competitive. The clubs Girls U12 4 x 100m team finished 4th, 68.94secs – team members Elaine Wright, Aine Gallagher, Katie Gillespie, Orla Coughlan. The Boys U12 team finished 5th, 67.09secs – team members Caolan Boyle, Thomas McGowan, Ronan McMullin and Dane Travers.

 

The girls U13 team finished in the bronze medal winning position, 62.58secs behind Glaslough, 61.51secs and Letterkenny, 61.55secs - team Eve Travers, Chloe Masterson, Amie Mc Cafferty and Eva Duncan.
