Our under age athletes have had a busy two weekends over the past month with the 'Ulster/NI Indoor Championships' taking place. At the first round held in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, the club had success with Karl Griffin, Louise Harvey, Kelly McGrory and Emma Brady all taking home medals.

The second round of these championships was held on Saturday last at the new indoor arena in Magherafelt and once again, success came the way of the next generation of club athletes.

Young Grace Nolan with a putt of 5.40m took a super silver in the U-12 girls shot putt. In the girls U-13 age group we saw, Eva McMullin take a good bronze in the 60m hurdles, just behind club mate Kate McGowan who took an excellent silver. Kate also took a good bronze medal in the 60m flat. Dillon McGloin, in his first competition at this level came home with a gold medal in the U-13 boy’s high jump and a bronze in the same age group, in the 60m hurdles.

There were also gold medals for the U-13 girl’s 4 x 100m relay team, with Ruth Gillespie, Kate McGowan, Sara Timoney and Eva McMullin passing the baton, while the U-14 girl’s 4 x 200m relay team claimed a good set of silver medals, with Emma Brady, Karen Tracey, Kelly McGrory and Kate McGowan. There were impressive performances from all the other athletes, with many making the finals in their events and some just missing out on medals with fourth place finishes.

Apart from the athletes mentioned the following also travelled and competed: U-12 age group, Tess O’Kennedy, Chloe Masterson, Ava Duncan, Eabha Reid, Emma Jane Mitchell, Catherine Early, Mary Ellen Doherty, Ciara Lynch, Aimee McCafferty Timmy Govorov, Eoin Slevin, Cian McEniff and Paul Murphy. U-13 age group, Ciara Doogan, Niamh McGrory, Dearbhla Hoey, Katie McCafferty, David Timoney, Daire O’Reilly and Brendan Oats. Competing in the U-14 boy’s relay squad were, Jamie Brennan, Conor Dawson and David Hastings. Congratulation and well done to all.
