The Irish Juvenile Indoor Multi events on Sunday last at Nenagh had one of the largest entries ever, some excellent individual performances and was held on one of the bleakest and coldest days of the winter.
Tír Chonaill athletes Kelly Mc Grory, Emma Brady, Christopher Doherty and Louise Harvey accompanied by parents/coaches Mary/Tish/David and Eamon made the early morning three hours trip south in sub zero conditions and following a day long competition where athletes compete in five disciplines - 60mHurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Putt and 800metres came home very satisfied.
Under 14 Girls
Twenty three competitors entered the U.14 girls competition. Emma Brady and Kelly Mc Grory, competing in their first pentathlon, finished 9th and 11th overall. Both girls won their heats of the 60m Hurdles in times of 10.4secs Emma and 10.5 secs [Kelly]. Emma, 3.89m and Kelly 3.44m added to their points total in the Long Jump. Shot Putt distances of 6.80m Emma and 6.27m Kelly kept both in mid place rankings. The High Jump, lasted for ninety minutes and found Emma clearing 1.18m and Kelly with a PB of 1.27m. Both were drawn in heat 2 of the 800m. Kelly went to the front at 400m and held on bravely to win in a time of 2mins 57.6secs. Emma fought her way to finish third in a time of 3mins 1.3scs.
Under 16 Boys
Christopher Doherty, competing in his first multi events also had a most successful outing. An 11.3 secs hurdles time, 4.20m Long Jump, 1.26m High Jump and a 7.03 metres Shot found the Killymard lad looking forward to the 800m. In a closely fought race where much jostling took place, Christopher was in the leading frame throughout and finished in time of 2mins 33.9secs. and an 8th overall placing.
Under 18 Girls
Louise Harvey was the only one of the Tir Chonaill quartet to have experience of multi event competition. She will be very happy with a 3rd overall place finish.Following excellent runs in the 60m Hurdles, where she defeated Orla Finn and age group National Hurdles champion Cloe Fahy and at the end of the day when she came from 5th to 3rd position with an exciting 800m victory and a PB of 2mins 35 secs. She also expressed satisfaction with a 1.46metres best in the High Jump and a 6.47m [4k] distance in the Shot. The long jump, 4.01m, where she had difficulty with her run up , possibly cost her another placing.
Thanks
