Tír Chonaill AC won the prestige National Club of the Year Award at the Athletics Association Gala Awards Banquet in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry on Saturday Evening, 15 November 2008. The award, a beautifully commissioned piece of Waterford Crystal, was presented to women’s team captain Jackie Harvey and club Chairman Paddy Donoghue by John Foley, chief executive of Waterford Crystal and Liam Hennessy, president of the AAI. Eamon Harvey, Marie Rooney, Philomena Gallagher and Ann Donoghue then joined Jackie and Paddy on the stage, to rapturous applause.

The club members present were joined friends Kathleen and Danny McDaid, their son Darragh and his friend Maria for what was a most enjoyable evening. Throughout the course of the evening many of the group got to meet some of their idols, Eamonn Coghlan, John Tracey, Pauline Curley, Paul Hession to mention but a few.

In selecting our club for the award from a shortlist of eight, the selection committee had a set of criteria to look at, through all aspects of the club, from coaching to juvenile athletics, from national and local success to club structures and community involvement to development plans and with the success of our women’s team in winning the National Premier League title this year adding weight to our cause, the award was a fitting reward for our club. Congratulations all.
