There was double joy for the club with both individual and team medals for our women and men at the Donegal Masters Cross-Country Championships in Milford on Sunday last. For the second weekend in a row the women of the club took team gold and the men team silver. Last weekend it was the novice teams while this time it was the master teams.

In the women’s race, the ever improving Marie Rooney, who this Thursday heads off to Athens to compete for the Bank of Ireland at the European Corporate games, came through the field strongly to take a good silver behind the runaway winner, Margaret Kelly of Letterkenny. Philomena Gallagher, after a cautious start, had a great race, moving up to take the bronze medal. Marie and Philomena were ably supported by Brenda Morris and Jackie Harvey to go on a take the team gold medals.

In the men’s race, Paul Ward, beginning his taper down for his first attempt at a marathon, was in fine form and always in contention, just failing to claim a bronze medal in a sprint finish, with a fine fourth place. Gary Thomas, also going for the marathon at the end of the month, had one of his best races over the country with a fine fifth place finish, with John Cannon running strongly to take eighth. The team was completed by Vinny Duffy, another man with his eyes on Dublin, in 13^th place and Richard McCarthy in 14^th, giving the team 30 points and silver medals behind Finn Valley with 21 and Inishowen in third.

All nine athletes from the club heading to Dublin for the marathon begin their taper down this week and with less than two weeks to go; all report clean bills of health.
