Donegal Novice Crosscountry Fintra, Killybegs County Donegal 2007

 

The club was active on two fronts again last weekend, with the cross country opener taking place in Fintra on Saturday and the traditional Grange 10k Sunday.  Fintra, splendid in an autumn glow, hosted the Donegal Novice Cross-Country Championships and the club had both a women’s and men’s team competing for the first time in many years.

 

The women were first away and prominent from the start was Sharon Meehan, up with the leaders and ably supported by Brenda Morris, Ann Donoghue and Bernie McNeely.  Sharon went on to take the individual bronze with a great third place.  Brenda, recovering from injury, had a strong run, while Ann and Bernie, their first time over the country, had excellent runs to ensure the team gold went to the club.

The men had a tougher battle on their hands.  Richard McCarthy, with his customary strong run and Vinny Duffy, with one of his best runs over the country, were up there mixing with a trio of Letterkenny men, while Sean Cassidy and Canice Nicholas, both with excellent runs, fought hard to maintain team positions and, supported by John Sneddon, brought the team home in a superb silver medal place, just two points behind a strong Letterkenny.

In the boys under 18 race, we had Gearoid McBhaird, in his first race over the country, giving a great account of himself with a fine 6th place finish in a high calibre field.
